Valupa consultant, Steve Henstock, has had a career in aviation engineering and design that spans over 40 years. He began his career as a trainee at the Department of Civil Aviation in Sydney and then went on to work at the Federal Airports Corporation and Electrical Airport Design Services. Through this work, he developed expertise in the specifics of the Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) of Sydney Airport and work on many other airports across NSW and Australia.
Steve worked extensively on Hong Kong Airport while at Thorn Lighting and during this time he worked on a number of other airports in the region. Through this work he built on his experience of cutting edge AGL technology and design and developed a thorough understanding of best practice AGL design across the globe.
This international experience lead Steve to create his own consultancy, Valupa, and works on both local and overseas AGL design project.
Steve has undertaken various AGL facility designs and for non instrument runways and for instrument runways from CAT I to CAT IIIA. This work has involved design and contract specifications for runway lighting, taxiway centreline and edge lighting, Movement Area Guidance Signs (MAGS), runway guard lights, stop bar lights, T-Visual Approach Slope Indicator System (T-VASIS), numerous Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) designs and AGL control systems.
In addition to design work, his work has included investigations into the serviceability of AGL lighting facilities, commissioning of AGL new facilities, including installation and maintenance of Visual Docking Guidance Systems (VDGS), supervision of and review of contractor’s work and investigations into construction issues and facility maintenance issues.
